Statement

For the past couple of years, I've been exploring themes of memory, time and relationships.  My interest in these themes started as a way to explore my connection to my home in Canada and my current home in Taiwan. I started to think about the common things that we all share no matter where we are in the world. I find it inspiring that these moments we experience, create a story in our head that we don't quite understand. If we pay attention, there are patterns that can connect us all. Originally, I started painting from vintage photos that were found when my mom cleared out my grandfather's house. I was moved by the life and stories that these little images told me. I started bringing that into my work, using ink as an underpainting and allowing parts of that to show through, as I painted layers of oil over top of other parts. I tried to create that washy look that you get as the image slowly starts to appear when you develop them in the darkroom. My paintings also incorporate elements of nature. For me, this ties into the idea of us all being apart of something together, no matter where you are or the species you happen to be.

I think Walt Whitman said it best, when he said "For every atom belonging to me, as good belongs to you."
